“One of the visitors to my first big exhibition in Munich was the son of one of the most important German Expressionists, Max Beckmann. Peter Beckmann then became my first collector and encouraged me to remain true to my unusual manner of expression. Another, deeply moving friendship was with an English photographer who was 80 years old back then, a close friend of Henry Moore, who told me passionately one day in my studio how deeply he was moved by my formal language. That one single meeting motivated me and accompanied me for many years afterwards. ”
